I'm Tia, and I'm so glad you're here.
Flapjack Theatrics is a Takoma Park, MD-based theatre company with a unique model. Created by ADHD cancer veteran Tia Shearer Bassett (hey, that's me!), every project involves a small number of close collaborators and aligns with values including: thoughtfully welcoming and caring for audiences, and being a helper in this world.
Flapjack crafts each piece slowly over time and on an artist-friendly schedule, creating gently interactive solo shows (& more!) for adults or all ages, with a focus on the beauty and delight of physical objects. Flapjack shows come in two flavors: made-for-Zoom, or in-person.
The (adorable!) flapjack octopus is a relatively recently-discovered creature! Scientists had to go to the exact right spots (deep-sea, off certain coasts) to find this unique little gem.
Our favorite work to do at Flapjack is stuff that feels like my weird (deep unique gem!) of a brain...work that is non-linear (Edward & Christine), or some amalgam of theatre and ______ (Glitter Vikings); work that upholds kid-logic (The Girl Who Swallowed A Cactus); work that defies norms. Work that makes its own rules, and lets you in on 'em too.
Flapjack shows have been streamed into homes across the world as well as into children’s hospital rooms; they've been performed in-person for 1-100 people in unconventional venues like living rooms, libraries, classrooms...and a circus tent! We'll turn any place into a place for theatre.
And be it an in-person or online show, we WELCOME YOU. You who need or wish to remain off-screen; you who need to move around while you watch a show; you who want to interact but are a rather nervous person (like me). We will be up-front about what to expect from each show, and all of our interaction is gentle. Your Flapjack show experience will be playful, comfy, deep and joyful and compassionately connective.
While the two Zoom shows toured from...my living room;)...THE GIRL WHO SWALLOWED A CACTUS performed in multiple locations this summer, from libraries in Florida, to a children's theater in Tennessee, to a pop-up circus tent in Cleveland as an official selection of the BorderLight Festival (pictured)!

"This show was pure magic. Tia Shearer Bassett brought a mix of playfulness and raw emotion that pulled us all—kids and grown-ups—into her world. Matt Bassett’s direction gave the story room to breathe and shine. It reminded us to hold on to hope, courage, and care for the planet. From ages 3 to 93, everyone in the audience left touched and inspired."
